Conclusion

What I particularly liked about this study is that Nike Air Max 1 Men uk sale the authors were very open about admitting its limitations. For example, they point out the the Nike Free has quite a bit of cushion and an elevated heel. Habitual barefooters jump all over anyone who claims that the Nike Free replicates barefoot running, and this study seems to prove them right, at least in terms of how it affects biomechanics (and much to the chagrin of Nike marketing¡). Studies of less cushioned shoes (e.g., Vibram Fivefingers) have revealed more similarity to barefoot running, but even ultraminimal shoes don¡¯t seem to be a perfect mimic to running without footwear. They also admit that by not controlling the standard shoe they may have not as easily detected differences between the minimal and more traditional shoes.

Nike has long touted the design of their Free line of running shoes as having been inspired by barefoot running. Indeed, the newest Free shoes have the phrase ¡°Barefoot Ride¡± written right on the insole (see photo at left). Personally, I¡¯m a fan of the Frees since they suit my preference for light, flexible, moderately cushioned shoes. However, despite their more minimal structure, I don¡¯t think they really come even close to simulating the experience of running barefoot (few shoes do).In Nike Air Max Thea Men uk sale my recent review of the Nike Free 5.0 I cited a study that compared running biomechanics in the Nike Pegasus and the Nike Free 3.0. This research has been out for awhile, but I never wrote about the paper. Since I¡¯ve been running a bunch in various Nike Free shoes lately, I thought I¡¯d write up a summary.

Another important point that the authors emphasize is that their subjects were very highly trained runners and that as a result they might ¡°already have highly consistent running mechanics and different types of shoes have little influence on their running gait.¡± They indicate that ¡°It is possible that lesser trained runners with less consistent mechanics may be more susceptible to changes in running gait when utilising a minimalist shoe.¡± As always, one must consider the subjects and conditions studied when applying the results of a scientific study, and I¡¯d once again love to take a look at individual variation.

I¡¯ll finish by saying that part of my disappointment regarding the release of the Nike Free Run+ stemmed from my belief that it¡¯s arrival was going to coincide with the disappearance of the Free 3.0. This would have been unfortunate since the Free 3.0 is one of my favorite shoes, and one that has played a big role in my minimalist transition. Turns out that the Free 3.0 is still available, at least for now, so if you want to give it a try it can be found at a few places on-line (check the Nike Store for starters) ¨C not sure how long it¡¯s going to last.

The upper of the Free 3.0 v6 is disappointing since the 4mm drop sole looks great and has the most rounded heel of the 3 shoes in the collection (looks like Nike ID currently only allows mix/match between the new 4.0 and 5.0): Nike_Free_Flyknit_3.0_sole The other big issue with the 3.0 v6 is price ¨C the v5 had an MSRP Nike Air Max 90 uk sale of $110, and v6 jumps to $140. That¡¯s a pretty steep price for a shoe like this. In addition to the images, Nike also released the following video to accompany the release ¨C lots of nice slow-mo images of forefoot strikes:Being both a scientist and a shoe geek, I love learning about the process that goes into the design of running shoes. I¡¯ve been a fan of the Nike Free line since the original Free 3.0, and have run in many models since. With the exception of a few lemon s (e.g., Free 3.0 v4), I¡¯ve like almost all of them.
