MELBOURNE, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- The livelihood of thousands of Victorian farmers is in jeopardy after they lost a contract with one of Australia's largest supermarket chains.

Woolworths Australia announced that it would walk away from its year-by-year arrangement with food processor Shepparton Processing Company (SPC) Ardmona to supply its private-label tinned tomatoes, putting thousands of jobs in Victoria's north-east at risk.

It is expected that Woolworths will instead source its tomatoes from overseas as a cheaper alternative, a decision that has been condemned by Australia's politicians.

Suzanna Sheed, an independent Victorian Member of Parliament (MP) for Shepparton where SPC Ardmona is based, said Woolworths' decision to abandon the region could be crippling.

"It would be very, very disappointing if a company like Woolworths walked away from a circumstance that was put in place when the company was in crisis, when our town, our region was in a crisis situation," Sheed told News Limited in comments published on Wednesday.

Though Woolworths will no longer use SPC tomatoes, the company said it would honor a separate five-year, 54 million U.S. dollar agreement signed in 2014 to keep the company from going bankrupt.

"We remain committed to the spirit of our five-year partnership with Coca-Cola Amatil's SPC Ardmona ... and we're presently engaged in discussions covering pricing and volumes for the coming season," Woolworths said in a statement published by Australian media on Wednesday.

"A separate year-to-year arrangement for the supply of Woolworths-brand Australian tinned tomatoes from CCA's SPC Ardmona has now concluded and we have advised that we will not renew this."

It is estimated that up to 5,000 jobs would be lost if SPC goes bankrupt, with many farming families preparing themselves for that situation.

"The supermarkets want it cheaper, but that means we're stitched up, we're finished, it's unsustainable," Gary Godwill, a fourth-generation peach farmer, told News Limited. "I'm sick of working seven days a week and making nothing."
